Fallback mode for flat/solid backgrounds, or if the AI model won't load on your connection. Removes pixels close to a chosen color instead of detecting the subject.
About the AI Background Remover
This tool runs a real subject-segmentation AI model directly in your browser to find the foreground in a photo — a person, animal, product, vehicle or object — regardless of how complex or multi-colored the background is. From there you get a genuine alpha mask you can refine: clean disconnected background islands, smooth or feather the edges, shift the boundary in or out, pull back hair detail, and strip background-color spill from around the subject. Nothing is uploaded; the model and your image both stay on your device.
How To Use
- Upload a photo — drag & drop, paste, or pick a file; AI removal starts when you click Remove Background (AI)
- Click Remove Background (AI) to start the AI removal
- Switch to Compare to check the edges against the original
- Use Smart Background Cleanup to remove leftover background objects around the main subject
- Adjust Edge Smoothness, Feather, Edge Shift and Decontamination until it looks right
- Pick a new background — transparent, solid color, gradient, image or blurred original
- Use Erase/Restore to hand-fix any stray spots, then export as PNG, JPG or WEBP
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this work on complex, busy backgrounds?
Yes — the AI mode segments the subject itself rather than matching a background color, so it works on rooms, outdoor scenes, textures and multi-color backgrounds, not just plain backdrops.
What if the AI keeps leaves, clutter or other background objects?
Keep Smart Background Cleanup enabled and increase its strength. It removes disconnected false-positive foreground regions while keeping the dominant subject and nearby fine details.
What if hair or fur edges look rough?
Turn on "Refine Hair & Edges", raise Edge Smoothness and Feather slightly, and enable Color Decontamination to pull out any background-color spill around fine strands.
Why does the first removal take longer than the next one?
The AI model (tens of megabytes) downloads once and is cached by your browser. Every removal after that starts noticeably faster.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No — the AI model and all processing run locally in your browser using WebAssembly and Canvas.
Can I still use plain color-based removal?
Yes, it's available under "Advanced: manual color-based removal" as a fallback for simple flat backgrounds or if your connection can't load the AI model.
